ABSTRACT This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the low doses of gamma rays (5, 10 and 15 Gy) on the histomorphology of the testes of the male red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) and its biological effect. The internal reproductive organs of the male red palm weevil is a pair of testes , two vas efferens, vas deferens, pair of vesicular seminal and pair of tubular accessory gland. The transverse sections, using light microscopy, illustrated that each testis consisted of about 16 follicles , the follicle contain a succession zones in which the sex cells are in different stages of development (spermatogenesis). Also, the epithelial cells of vas efferens consisted of regular columnar cells with spherical basal nuclei and encircled by layers of muscles. Gamma radiation doses altered the morphology and histology of each follicle. At the lowest dose (5 Gy), all stages of sperm development were present with amounts of vacuoles and the nuclei of epithelial cells to vas efferens showed aggregation in many parts while at high doses (10 and 15 Gy), retardation of spermatogenesis could be observed such as abnormal spermatocyte shapes, damaged spermatid, sperm bundles and some of them were completely absent, changed to liquefied material. The results were reinforced by studying the fecundity and fertility of the adult male which appeared significantly decreased by increasing the dose level when compared with the untreated control. The results obtained from this trial encouraged the possibility to use the SIT against the red palm weevil.
